How green is my garden

This summer, my DH (darling husband) and I decided to get green and build a veggie garden. Armed with everything from gloves and seedlings to books and PH testers, we built two garden beds in the front yard, bought a cubic metre of soil and headed straight for the nursery. 

It was a tough to finalise the list, but these guys made the cut:

-       Climbing beans

-       Grosse Lisse tomatoes

-       Lebanese cucumbers

-       Sweet basil

-       Cos lettuce

-       Green chillies; and

-       Dutch carrots

 One bed was planted from seed and the other from small seedlings. We also used Ross’ fabulous wifi watering system, to guarantee regular watering every morning at 6am. As the weeks passed, the beautiful veggies began to sprout. But our produce began to take on its own personality. The tomatoes gradually took over garden bed #1 and hogged all the sun. Not only did they overshadow (bully) the chillies and basil, but busted over and popped through the fence line. 

Over in garden bed #2, the beans were shy slow takers. But the adjacent cucumbers shot up, and grew with little tendrils that delightfully curl around whatever was in their path – including the beans, as well as our pet plastic flamingo. In the end, they all became lovers.  

As the season grew to a close, these are my observations on our first crop:

-       The coriander attracted lots of fungus

-       Stroking the plants doesn’t mean they will grow 

-       The bigger cucumber leaves are crinkly

-       Eating a crisp tomato you've grown yourself is very, very satisfying

Yes, the carrots need a little work.
